The value and responsibility of the individual is manifest theme. In the story The Ones Who Walk away From Omelas the conflict brings out the value and responsibility of the individuals in the town. The conflict of omelas is either to stay or leave, Omelas was like paradise, was full of happy people neither stress nor pain. Their choices were to stay and be happy, but some was happy for a little period of time. There was a child boy or girl that sat in a basement in a beautiful building who had to suffer. The child was only about 6 or 7 with little water and food to eat. The child represented the people in Omelas Stress and pain. That one child represents all that stress, they figured if they let the child out the world will be like ours as the author says in the passage. Which leave the people with their choices if they should stay or go? Man vs. the world is like one child vs. everyone’s happiness. Which leaves everyone with the question, would you leave are do something about that one child suffering for everyone else?
Ausha Meggett
The value and responsibility of the individual was the theme for the short story " The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". In this short story there was a child locked away in a basement and treated poorly. He was kept in a small room, with dirt floors,no windows, and absolutely no one was permitted to talk to the child. The child was kept in inhumane conditions they treated him without care and he was in a cruel enviorment. Citizens felt bad after visiting the child they would go home and cry or they would leave the city because they felt the child deserved better. Since he was kept in inhumane conditions this demonstrated the value of the childs life not being as worthy as the others.

The theme of the value and responsibility of the individual is supported by the conflict in the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” The boy being locked away for the joy and happiness of others is the main conflict. The townspeople could have decided to have a meeting and deal with their guilt in a different way, but they did not. Without the boy they wouldn’t have happiness so he represents the value of the individual. Individually they could have voted to decide to do something other than lock him away.

As humans, our first instinct is to protect ourselves. The characters in The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas help support the theme by defining the major points that make up people and society as a whole. There are many ways people see themselves. They may see themselves as a the one who likes to stay ahead, or the one who puts other first, maybe even a person who does a little of both and the list goes on and on. The major points can differ from person to person, but it all comes down to a person either being a collective thinker or an individualist thinker. The characters involved in this story (the citizens - stay, the citizens - leave, the Wretched one, narrator, and us as a people) have very little description to their backgrounds and not much is known about them. However, with the way the story is told, the sense of their outlooks on people, life, and society can be noticed.
...
The setting supports the theme of the value and responsibility of the individual the part about the basement that’s placed under the town of omelas. In this quote “The door is always locked and nobody ever comes, except that sometimes the child has no understanding of time….basically the town blames the child for all their sins and unhappiness. All the citizens rely on the child for them not being happy such as if they all help each other out then would be willing to not let the child suffer anymore. Like it seems as though the citizens have more control or power than the boy. Who is considered powerless and wanting to take a chance to build on from each other instead of putting the blame on one innocent boy.

others around.
In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, a little boy held that responsibility And carried all the burden as if he was a storage place “They all know that it has to be there. Some of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendship, health of their children…..etc, depend on this one Childs abominable misery.
In this quote the little boy had the entire burden to keep the town happy. It was his responsibility to stay in solitary confinement. He had a strong value in the town that only benefits others. Would he be proud if he knew?

The theme of Anthem is original invention/ creation is key to indepedence is developed through the character,Equality7-2521. He's creativity and need to explore lead him to independence because his discovery made him want to sneak away to do his own thing, especially when he runs away from Antheme's society and is forced to findhis own food and way. I believe his risk taking characteristic makes him gain independence. Ayn Rand shows his creativity through his invention of light which also leads to his independence.

byIdenity Crisis:
The theme in the novel "Ayn Rand" is idenity crisis. The people in anthem believe that they must all be the same and that being singled out is a sin. In the story Eqaulity stated '" We strive to be like all our brothers men, for all men must be a like." In anthem they also are not able to choose a job based on interest the council gives them a job that they want them to have. Another sin is to give men a name that would distinguish them from other men. Eqaulity along with many of his brothers was catergorized as one as a whole instead of one as a person. The result of this is idenity crisis. A persons opinion, feelings, knowledge, style, and personality all makes them a unique individual. Not being able to be yourself and having to be like everyone else when you dont want to you face idenity crisis. - Ausha M.

Individuality is needed to help society progress which is the theme in Antheme and is shown by the character. In the story Equality does things that by himself got completed and could have helped their society progress. “We made it. We created it … Our alone and only”. This quote shows how he still has the mind set of his brothers and he still cares for their society but him working by himself helped it progress. Individuality is the distinctive characteristic, and only Equality during this time was thinking of how to really improve their society to make life easier.
The impotence of the collective group.

In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand sets a satirical tone by her use of humor and exaggeration. Equality 7-2521 lives in a world where everyone is equal, no one goes against the “upper hand”, and everything is strictly planned out. “When the bell rings we all arise from our beds..the shadow on the sundial marks off a half-hour while we dress and eat our breakfast in the dining hall..then we go to work in the streets of the city, in five hours, when the sun is high we return to the home and eat our midday meal for which one half-hour is allowed..” By Ayn Rand’s use of the characters having to stick to a well planned out schedule, she is ridiculing the way things are in their collectivist world. We as readers know that this would never happen and that she exaggerates the collectivism.

Ayn Rand's tone is satirical in her novel "Anthem". An example of this is when
she purposely has no guards watching Equality while he is incarcerated. "It was
easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. The locks are old on the
doors and the are no guards about. There is no reason to have guards, for men
never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were
ordered to be. Irony is being showed here because anytime someone is
incarcerated, they have supervision making sure that they maintain orderly
conduct. Irony is a part of satire, and she uses details to exploit the absence
of something expected to be present, in turn showing her satirical tone.

Ayn Rand's tone is satirical because when Equalitys shows off his nwew creation of light the scholars reacts rejective. "How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers." What this quote means is that Equality is not worthy enough to have individuality and high expectations of himself because in his society he can't be different than others or he would be breaking the law. This supports my point because it uses irony in which gives the opposite reaction of what should have happened.

The tone of Anthem is satirical, one of the reasons I said it is satirical is; There's a lot of ridicule and ironic thing going on in the book. One of the moments that stood out to me was when Ayn Rand started writing about how none of the people in the city had ever seen there self, and couldn't because it was forbidden. She started by say having the main character Equality say " Man never see their own faces and never ask their brothers about it, for it is evil to have concern on their own face or bodies." By Ayn Rand is trying to make the city like there aganist individualty. they want everybody in the city to thank as their self as " WE " instead of " I ", so everybody will always feel equal and the only person with power in the councils.

The tone of Anthem is satirical, one of the reasons I said it is satirical is because the author is making fun of the human society. One person goes on their own wile the other street sweepers stay and follow the rules. When Equality shows the light."But terror struck the men of the council. They leapt to their feet, they ran from the table, snd they stood pressed against the wall, huddled togather, seeking the warmth of one another's bodies to give them courage". In this example she is showing how some people in the society and how dumb some people are when it comes to discovering new things and never let people express their ideas sometimes.
