In our society, we've been taught that it's important to always stand up for what we believe in. However, in The City they were raised to follow all laws set in place and never think of one person more than another. Equality highly valued his findings and new-found knowledge, and he wasn't willing to give it up for anything. Equality discovered a tunnel that was left over from The Unmentionable Times. This tunnel was where he learned and made discoveries that could help their society progress. When Equality was late returning to his home, he was questioned about his whereabouts. When he refused to tell and was sent to the Palace Of Corrective Detention and was beaten until he told where he had been. Days went by and he still wouldn't tell, but he was eager for the scholars to learn of his discoveries. However, when he displayed his discoveries, he was shunned by the society and the Scholars forcing him to leave the city and live in the Uncharted Forest, being named The Damned One. Equality gave up everything he had ever known to pursue feelings he had for most of his life. He made a decision to follow his mind and stay stable in what he believed in.

Original invention/creation is key to independence.
by Desiree` Anderson
Original invention/creation is the key to independence is the main expressed theme throughout Anthem. In the book, Equality had never questioned the law of the land, until he began uncovering new knowledge. When he finds the underground tunnel, Equality becomes curious and begins furthering his own education. With that comes what he believes is his first invention, electricity. And from there, he creates his box of light. His extensive knowledge already sets him apart from the group, but it isn't until he presents his discovery to the World Council of Scholars that he is acknowledged as an individual and realizes that being independent is a right . Therefore, his independence initially comes from his own original creation.

Tone Analyses
Each member of your group must write one analysis of a single, agreed upon tone. The group should decide on whether or not the tone changes over the course of the novel. If it does not, write about a single tone. If it does, write about the shift between two tones. Make sure to sign your analysis.

There are several ways in Ayn Rand's "Anthem" that express a satirical tone. "Anthem" is about a young man named Equality. The town that Equality lives in, Anthem, is a society solely based on collectivism. Where there is no "I" or individual. All thoughts or ideas come from the entire group and aren't accepted unless everyone agrees upon them. Throughout the entire book, Rand's choice in exaggerating the words"we" and "our" help to support the satirical tone. Rand chooses to write about 3/4 of the book substituting where "I" or "me" would be with "we" and "our". She does this so that the reader can get familiar with the use of "our" and "we", to make the moment where he refers to himself as "I" more exaggerated and significant. When she explain this moment, she begins almost every sentence with "I" and even begins chapter 11 with "I am. I think. I will." This line wouldn't e as strong as it was, had it not been for the extreme emphasis on all the "we"s and "our"s throughout the book, which supports the satirical theme in "Anthem". - Desiree` Anderson
