Theme Analyses
Each member must submit at least one theme analysis, two of which must be from the following:

Individuality is key to society progressing.
by Ally Johnson
In the novel Anthem, the theme that was demonstrated throughout the text by characterization, setting, and conflict was that individuality is the key to society progressing. Ayn Rand introduced Equality 7-2521 as an individual stuck in a world of collectivists. From the very first description of Equality 7-2521 he stuck out from his peers like a sore thumb; he's six foot tall, smarter than the rest, and constantly questions his society. This collectivist society is living in the dark ages, the latest form of technology from the past 100 years is a measly candle. The reason why this society can't progress is because the process it takes for one person to create a technology and introduce it to another collective society makes them superior. But when Equality 7-2521 throws the collectivist ideas out of his head he is able to create electricity.

The impotence of the collective group.

The value of martyrdom.

Original invention/creation is key to independence.
by: Lynica McClellan
The theme of Anthem is original invention/ creation is key to indepedence is developed through the character,Equality7-2521. He's creativity and need to explore lead him to independence because his discovery made him want to sneak away to do his own thing, especially when he runs away from Antheme's society and is forced to findhis own food and way. I believe his risk taking characteristic makes him gain independence. Ayn Rand shows his creativity through his invention of light which also leads to his independence.

A third theme analysis must be submitted on a theme of your choice. You are welcome to analyze the contributions of character, conflict, setting, and/or other elements of the text.

Idenity Crisis:
The theme in the novel "Ayn Rand" is idenity crisis. The people in anthem believe that they must all be the same and that being singled out is a sin. In the story Eqaulity stated '" We strive to be like all our brothers men, for all men must be a like." In anthem they also are not able to choose a job based on interest the council gives them a job that they want them to have. Another sin is to give men a name that would distinguish them from other men. Eqaulity along with many of his brothers was catergorized as one as a whole instead of one as a person. The result of this is idenity crisis. A persons opinion, feelings, knowledge, style, and personality all makes them a unique individual. Not being able to be yourself and having to be like everyone else when you dont want to you face idenity crisis. - Ausha M.

Tone Analyse
Each member of your group must write one analysis of a single, agreed upon tone. The group should decide on whether or not the tone changes over the course of the novel. If it does not, write about a single tone. If it does, write about the shift between two tones. Make sure to sign your analysis.

In the novel Anthem Ayn Rand was very critical of a collectivist society. When she introduced Equality 7-2521 she simply described his outward apperance as a cursed member of society because he's much taller than his "brothers". This society is all for the "we", hence the constant repetition. Rand wanted to make sure the readers knew how bad it sounded to live by the "your brother are everything, while you are nothing" type lifestyle. She even made a point to show that the only technology that has been developed in the last 100 years under this type of society is a candle. Ayn Rand wanted to make her stance as pro-individualism was seen and heard in all throughout her novel. - AllyJ.

Lynica McClellan
Ayn Rand tone in Antheme was indirect which she expresses very much through her word choice. Rand is indirect basically until the end of the book, when she finally writes "I think. I am. I will." She never just wrote I like individualism much better than a collectivist society. Through this quote she shows that would prefer individualism but she still doesnt write that. She builds the whole book up to this point.
