Theme Analyses Each member must submit at least one theme analysis, two of which must be from the following:
Individuality is key to society progressing.
by I identify the theme for this story being Individual v.s Society. The Author expresses this by showing that the Main character going against the rules of society for example the first page of the first chapter, as it says in the text"it IT IS A SIN TO WRITE THIS. It is a sin to think words no others think and put them down upon paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone. We have broken the laws. The laws say that men may not write unless the council of Vocations bid them so. May we be forgivin". Another example is how Equality shows his curiosity for science and his self study that he conduts in his tunnel with creating or fiding the light box.
Dylan Menard:
Collectivism calls upon the mind of one conception. By this, I may only clarify through another, separate inquiry. In the individualistic society, we have separate bodies, with separate minds and opinions. However, with those bodies, we may form groups – groups of individual, uniquely perceiving minds, from which we each may act as the mental blacksmith, kneading the steel of forged ideas, as a hammer may strike a sword in separate places, creating a tool of purpose and precision.
In the collective society, the group is invert, and all opinion is omitted, or must manifest as one, singular piece of collective data. This is as if the hammer were to strike one position on the sword, only deforming it, and murdering therefore the possibility to progress or produce something useful.
The impotence of the collective group.

Original invention/creation is key to independence.
by Miashanti Smith
the theme of origional invention/ creation is key to independence is cause by the conflict that Equality has in the story. Equality finds his independence in his invention for example the box with the light in it, sling shot, and cooking for the first time for his self. "And we thought suddenly that there was a great satisfaction to be found in the food which we need and obtain by own hands (79). The example show that Equality gain independence by working on things by his self instanded of with his brothers. I support the point with the decision he makes by not obeying the law of the group of the council.
A third theme analysis must be submitted on a theme of your choice. You are welcome to analyze the contributions of character, conflict, setting, and/or other elements of the text.

Tone Analyses Each member of your group must write one analysis of a single, agreed upon tone. The group should decide on whether or not the tone changes over the course of the novel. If it does not, write about a single tone. If it does, write about the shift between two tones. Make sure to sign your analysis.
"And now I see the face of god, and I raise this god over the earth, this god whom men have sought since men came into being, this god who will grant them joy and peace and pride," (Equality, pg. 97).
Ayn Rand’s Anthem works to establish a very strong, philosophical tone. Equality, the main character in this first-person tale, speaks inwardly. He contemplates his every decision, and analyzes the very fibers of the world around him. In doing so, he ushers in a new style of life itself. This actively secures the tone. Passively, on Rand’s part, the story contains very little dialogue. In doing so –meanwhile—nothing is set to oppose the active security of the tone, as thoughts become primary, and are allowed to grow and expand within Equality as he searches for the world constricted and cut off by his own. This allows the tone to thrive.
-Dylan Menard
" I owe nothing to my brothers ,nor do i gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do i live for any others. I covet no man's soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet" (96).
In this qoute I feel it shows a lot of bitterness from Any Rands part, but the part were it show most is when she start to have Equality disown his brothers, disown the group
disown the council. Any is more for independents then for the group showing that she disagrees with the group so that she is very bitter towards it. it shows the conflict between working for yourself and working group and how they both play a big part in this novel.
-Mishanti Smith
-Charles Hickerson. I define this book as having a very skeptical tone or even a questionable tone. As the question runs through my mind"what is the ideal life for society?". This book demonstrates what a city based on collectivism(what some people find ideal for society today) would be like and the questioning of one man that goes against collectivism and shows how individualism can help the cities progression. He goes against and questions all rules and rugulations that have been set for the city, thinking greater, being physically different, Being curious and conducting self studies.
