The theme of the value of martyrdom is demonstrated in the novel by the actions on Equality. In the text Equality was willing to go to any extent to protect the tunnel and his light box. He got caught and was trapped in a room for thirty days, he only got to eat once a day and he got lashed continuously day after day. That shows that he was so dedicated to keeping his light box a secret and to keep it safe that he was willing to put himself at harm. Another was that he shows the values of martyrdom is he was brave enough to disregard all the rules and laws and he snuck away and confronted the Scholars. He put himself in a situation where he could be in a lot of trouble but once again he did not care because the light box was more important to him than any trouble he could have got himself in.
